TikToker Shikie Kariuki issued a public apology to digital creator and actress Carrol Muthoni Sonnie after receiving heavy criticism for comments she made about Sonnie’s recent weight gain. In a video posted on her official TikTok account on Sunday, November 30, 2025, Shikie explained that her intention had not been to attack Sonnie’s appearance or demean her in any way. She said her remarks were misunderstood and stressed that she never meant to body shame her.

Shikie acknowledged that her earlier video may have made Sonnie uncomfortable and admitted that her words could have sounded insensitive, especially since body changes are a personal topic for many people. “Ile video nilifanya ya Carrol Sonnie siku mtusi, and I never body shamed her. I apologise to Carrol Sonnie if she felt uneasy about it, I am very sorry. I apologise,” she said.

The apology came after a wave of online reactions calling out Shikie for focusing on another woman’s physical appearance. Her earlier clip had openly questioned Sonnie’s recent weight gain and included remarks about her stomach and overall shape. Shikie also suggested that Sonnie should be cautious about gaining more weight, implying that additional changes might affect how balanced her figure looked.

What Triggered the Online Conversation?

The comments drew attention quickly, prompting Sonnie to respond through Instagram on Saturday, November 29, 2025. Her message was calm but firm. She noted that while she was not shaken by the criticism, she was disappointed that another woman would choose to highlight her body instead of minding her own business. Sonnie pointed out that Shikie regularly comments on the personal lives of others but reacts defensively whenever people address her own behavior.

“She always has opinions about other people’s lives, but when it comes to her, that’s where she draws the line,” Sonnie wrote.

After watching several of Shikie’s videos, Sonnie said she felt there was nothing worthwhile to respond to. Instead, she advised her to take life less seriously and avoid focusing on other women’s bodies. “I have gone through her TikTok videos, and I reserve my comment. Bbg, relax and enjoy life. It’s never that serious,” she noted.

How Did the Conversation Shift Toward Accountability?

This exchange sparked wider conversations on social media about online commentary, personal boundaries, and how creators address sensitive subjects. Many young Kenyans highlighted the importance of respecting people’s bodies and avoiding unnecessary criticism, especially on public platforms where messages spread fast and can be easily misinterpreted.

Shikie’s apology marked an important step in acknowledging the impact of her words, and the discussion that followed reflected a growing awareness among creators about the need for responsible commentary and empathy online.
