Vera Sidika is calling for immediate action as cases of gender-based violence continue to rise, stressing that the abuse occurring in marriages and relationships must no longer be tolerated. On Monday, November 17, 2025, she condemned GBV as totally unacceptable and warned that many women lose their lives because of it. Her message added to a growing wave of concern from public figures who are urging society to act before more harm is done.

Janet Mbugua also addressed the issue, responding to a widely shared incident that has sparked outrage nationwide. She said, “You’ve seen the Mike Sonko video. A daughter was assaulted. A father stepping in. It is painful to watch because it is the reality for so many.” Mbugua pushed for clarity in how the public labels such acts, insisting that they must be recognised for what they truly are.

Why Is Protecting Survivors More Urgent Than Ever?

Mbugua continued, “We need to name what this is. GBV. Violence. A violation of safety and dignity.” She stressed the importance of strengthening support systems so survivors know where to seek help when their safety is threatened. She encouraged anyone in danger, or who knows someone facing abuse, to reach out to a trusted friend, neighbour, or crisis hotline.

Both Sidika and Mbugua emphasised that survivors deserve protection, compassion, and justice. They urged authorities to take firm action, ensuring perpetrators are held accountable through fair and effective legal processes. Sidika pointed out that the recent viral video serves as a warning that society cannot afford to ignore these cases. Families and communities must play their part by protecting individuals at risk and responding early when signs of abuse appear.

What Solutions Can Help Reduce the Rising Cases of GBV in Kenya?

The growing concern expressed by both celebrities highlights the need for Kenya to adopt a more comprehensive approach to tackling GBV. Many cases remain unreported because survivors fear stigma, retaliation, or feel unsupported by existing systems. This is why increased awareness, improved reporting channels, and stronger community involvement are essential.

Voices like Sidika’s and Mbugua’s are pushing the conversation forward, urging leaders and citizens to recognise the seriousness of the crisis. Their goal is to ensure that women can live safely and confidently, without fear of violence in their homes or relationships. Their message is clear: until systems become stronger and accountability becomes consistent, the fight against gender-based violence must remain a national priority.
