Nairobi Man Jailed for Two Months After Failing to Pay Ksh.22,760 Party Bill

A Nairobi man will spend two months in jail or pay a fine of Ksh.30,000 after failing to settle a hotel bill of Ksh.22,760, which he accumulated during a night of partying at a popular restaurant in Upper Hill.

The court heard that Qurine Omondi Muteshi obtained credit by pretense on October 3, 2025, at Vibanda Village in Nairobi County. According to the prosecution, Omondi entered the restaurant, ordered food, alcoholic drinks, and water for himself and his friends, but left without paying. By the end of the night, the total bill had shot up to Ksh.22,760.

What Led to the Unpaid Bill?

While appearing before Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina, Omondi admitted that he lost control during the celebration. “I had some money so I called my friends to celebrate. During the celebration, I became so high and was surrounded by many ladies, each asking for drinks. Eventually, people disappeared, and I was left alone with the bill,” he told the court.

He further explained that he later noticed suspicious loan deductions on his phone and was shocked to see how much debt had accumulated. Pleading for leniency, Omondi said, “The court can forgive me even if it is with punishment, as I work to pay for the bill. Some of us suffer because we are still new in Nairobi. This is my fourth year in the city, but I am not yet conversant with all its corners.”

After reviewing his mitigation, Chief Magistrate Onyina sentenced Omondi to two months in prison or a fine of Ksh.30,000. The ruling has drawn mixed reactions online, with some sympathizing with Omondi’s situation and others warning about the financial risks of overindulging during social outings in the city.

The case serves as a reminder to many young Nairobians about the cost of uncontrolled partying and the importance of staying financially responsible in a city where one night out can quickly lead to serious legal consequences.
