A Kisii County Member of Parliament is facing public scrutiny after allegedly assaulting a man in a restaurant over a suspected love triangle. The incident reportedly occurred on Thursday, November 27, when the victim, 36-year-old Omariba Moriasi, filed a police complaint accusing the lawmaker of attacking him.
CCTV footage from the restaurant shows the victim seated for breakfast when a man, later identified as the Kisii MP, entered and immediately confronted Omariba. The footage captured a tense confrontation lasting several minutes, during which other patrons intervened to separate the two.
“He stormed in directly to me shouting ati lazima utaniheshimu…. wachana na girlfriend yangu,” Omariba said, describing how the MP allegedly assaulted him. He also reported sustaining injuries during the attack.
Omariba’s lawyers expressed concern over the MP remaining free despite the case being filed on the same day at Kisii Central Police Station. “We filed this matter on Thursday, and we are asking why the member of parliament is still walking free. We have all the P3 forms,” they said. The legal team emphasized that their client is in potential danger, suggesting that the MP may attempt further harm.
What led to the confrontation?
According to the victim, the assault stemmed from interference in the MP’s private affairs, specifically a romantic dispute. The case highlights the ongoing debate over accountability for public officials involved in personal conflicts that escalate into physical violence.
Authorities have not released a statement on whether the MP has been summoned or charged. Meanwhile, Omariba and his legal representatives continue to push for immediate action to ensure his safety and proper investigation into the alleged assault.
This incident raises broader questions about the behavior of elected officials and the mechanisms in place to hold them accountable, particularly when personal disputes cross into public altercations. The community and legal observers are watching closely as the case develops.
