Wanu Hafidh Ameir: Samia Suluhu’s Daughter Appointed to Tanzania’s Cabinet

Wanu Hafidh Ameir has built a long and steady political career within Tanzania’s ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) Party, serving as a member of the Zanzibar House of Representatives since 2005. She retained her seat in the October 29, 2025 general election under the CCM ticket, the same platform that supported her mother, President Samia Suluhu Hassan, in her presidential bid. Beyond politics, Wanu is a trained lawyer with a Bachelor of Law from the Open University of Tanzania, adding professional depth to her public life.

Born on February 9, 1982, in Unguja South, she is the eldest child of President Samia Suluhu and Hafidh Ameir. At 43, she remains the only daughter in the family, with three brothers who keep low profiles compared to her public-facing career. Her marriage to Mohamed Mchengerwa further links her to CCM leadership. Mchengerwa, 46, is the Member of Parliament for Rufiji Constituency and has held various cabinet roles, including ministerial duties in the president’s office. In the most recent reshuffle, he was appointed Minister of Health.

What role has Wanu played through the Mwanamke Initiatives Foundation?

Wanu is the foundation chair and board chairperson of the Mwanamke Initiatives Foundation, a registered NGO focused on the welfare of women, youth, and children. The foundation works to build national dialogue, expand access to information, and support skill development across health, education, and socio-economic sectors. Its mission is to translate global development strategies into practical, local actions that uplift vulnerable groups.

Her role involves overseeing strategic planning, program development, financial management, human resource coordination, and partnerships with stakeholders. She also represents the foundation publicly, guiding its advocacy and community engagement efforts across the country.

Why has her cabinet appointment sparked online debate?

On Monday, November 17, 2025, President Samia Suluhu Hassan announced a new cabinet lineup at the State House in Dodoma, appointing Wanu Hafidh Ameir as Deputy Minister of Education. Her husband, Mohammed Mchengerwa, was promoted to Minister of Health. The reshuffle triggered widespread conversation online, especially after former President Jakaya Kikwete’s son, Ridhiwani Kikwete, was named Minister for Governance. The promotions strengthened the presence of politically connected families within key government roles.

These appointments came just days after President Samia was declared the winner of Tanzania’s disputed election with 97.66 per cent of the vote. Critics, who argued the race was uncompetitive due to barred challengers, raised concerns about nepotism and the growing concentration of power within the ruling establishment. While receiving her certificate of victory in Dodoma, President Samia defended her mandate amid accusations of centralising authority and limiting dissent.
