French President Emmanuel Macron found himself stuck in New York City traffic on Monday evening, not behind the wheel but at a crosswalk. A police officer stopped him from crossing the street to make way for U.S. President Donald Trump’s motorcade.
What could have been an awkward moment quickly turned light-hearted. Macron, standing on the sidewalk with his delegation, turned the situation into a playful diplomatic moment by phoning Trump directly. According to a circulating video clip, the French leader used the wait as an opportunity to poke fun and press on with business.
“I’m sorry, Mister President, I’m really sorry,” the visibly embarrassed officer told Macron. “It’s just that everything’s been frozen right now. There’s a motorcade coming.”
Macron responded with humor: “If you don’t see it, let me cross. I negotiate with you,” a nod to the high-stakes negotiations he and other world leaders are engaged in this week during the United Nations General Assembly.
Forced to wait, Macron dialed Trump and quipped, “Guess what – I’m waiting in the street because everything is frozen for you.” He then added that he would like to have a short discussion with Trump and Qatar about the situation in Gaza.
A source close to the French president later confirmed that the conversation took place while Macron was still walking. The source described the exchange as warm and friendly, noting that the two leaders used the impromptu call to touch on several international issues.
