Erika Kirk, the widow of American activist Charlie Kirk, has publicly forgiven the man accused of killing her husband. Speaking at a memorial service in Glendale, Arizona, on September 21, she delivered a heartfelt address that left many deeply moved.
Reflecting on her husband’s mission, Erika reminded mourners of his compassion and dedication to saving young men. “My husband wanted to save young men, just like the one who took his life, that man, that young man,” she said, drawing applause from the audience. Despite her grief, she declared forgiveness rooted in her Christian faith. “I forgive him. I forgive him because it was what Christ did, and it is what Charlie would do.”
Why Did Erika Kirk Choose Forgiveness?
Erika explained that her choice came from her belief that love, not hate, is the true response to violence. “The answer to hate is not hate. The answer we know from the gospel is love and always love – love for our enemies and love for those who persecute us,” she said. She also addressed the debate over whether the accused should face the death penalty. “I want the government to decide this. I do not want that man’s blood on my ledger. Because when I get to heaven, and Jesus is like, ‘Uh, [an] eye for an eye? Is that how we do it?’ And that keeps me from being in heaven, from being with Charlie?”

What Happened to Charlie Kirk?
Charlie Kirk was fatally shot on September 10 at Utah Valley University during a campus debate. The suspect, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, has been charged with murder and could face the death penalty if convicted. Prosecutors revealed text messages allegedly sent by Robinson that pointed to his anger at Kirk’s views.
At the memorial, Erika recounted the devastating moment she saw her husband’s body at the hospital after he was shot in the neck. “I saw the wound that ended his life … I felt shock, I felt horror and a level of heartache that I didn’t even know existed,” she said, though she found comfort in noticing “the faint smile on his lips” and the belief that he did not suffer..
