Charlie Kirk, the 31-year-old right-wing activist and close ally of President Donald Trump, was fatally shot while speaking at Utah Valley University. The attack has sparked nationwide reactions and an intense manhunt for the shooter.
What happened at Utah Valley University?
Kirk, co-founder and head of the largest conservative youth movement in the United States, was addressing a crowd around noon under a tent on the university’s campus. Wearing a white t-shirt with the word “Freedom,” he sat in a chair while responding to questions from attendees.
Former Utah congressman Jason Chaffetz, who was present, described the moment the shooting occurred. According to him, Kirk was answering a question about “transgender shooters, mass shooters, and in the midst of that, the shot rang out.” A video from a nearby location showed Kirk collapsing as blood spurted from his neck before security rushed him away on a stretcher.
“As soon as that shot went out, he fell back,” Chaffetz told Fox News. “Everybody hit the deck… a lot of people started screaming, and then everybody started running.”
Who is behind the shooting?
Authorities confirmed the shooting was a “targeted attack.” The Utah Department of Public Safety reported that the gunman is believed to have fired from the roof of a building overlooking the student courtyard.
Two men were briefly detained and later released, while another man, George Zinn, was charged with obstruction but not tied to the attack itself. As of now, no suspect has been identified, and the manhunt is ongoing.
How has the political world responded?
Donald Trump was the first to announce Kirk’s death on his Truth Social platform, calling him “The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk.” Other political leaders, including Vice President Kamala Harris, condemned the violence. Harris stated that “political violence has no place in America.”
Trump later released a somber four-minute video from the Oval Office, blaming the “radical left” for fueling violent rhetoric. “This kind of rhetoric is directly responsible for the terrorism that we’re seeing in our country today,” he said. He further promised a crackdown, vowing his administration would pursue not only those directly involved in the killing but also organizations that support political violence.
The investigation remains active, with law enforcement under pressure to bring clarity and justice after one of the most high-profile political killings in recent U.S. history.
