Fenerbahce Sack Jose Mourinho, after Champions League Elimination

Fenerbahce has officially parted ways with Portuguese coach Jose Mourinho, just two days after the team’s elimination from the Champions League playoffs by Benfica. The Turkish club announced on Friday through a statement thanking the 62-year-old for his efforts since joining in June 2024.

“We have parted ways with Jose Mourinho, who served as head coach of our professional A team since the 2024-2025 season. We thank him for his efforts for our team and wish him success in his future career,” the statement read.

Mourinho’s tenure at Istanbul’s Yellow Canaries was short-lived but eventful. Despite guiding the side to a second-place finish in the league last season, narrowly behind rivals Galatasaray, he was unable to deliver the long-awaited league title that fans had hoped for.

Why did Mourinho’s time at Fenerbahce end so quickly?

While his experience and reputation brought high expectations, Mourinho’s stint was overshadowed by controversies and setbacks. His most notable incident came in April during a heated Turkish Cup clash, where he grabbed Galatasaray coach Okan Buruk’s face and tweaked his nose after a 2-1 defeat.

That was not the only moment that drew headlines. Mourinho also faced disciplinary action after making fiery remarks about referees in another derby match, accusing the fourth official of bias. His statements were ruled “contrary to sporting ethics” by the football authorities, leading to a fine.

Mourinho, who has previously managed some of Europe’s biggest clubs, including Chelsea, Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, and Roma, now faces an uncertain future. While his time in Turkey did not produce silverware, his name still carries significant weight in European football.
