Former Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama has praised the national team for their impressive performance in the African Nations Championship (CHAN), despite their exit at the quarterfinal stage. Speaking on Citizen TV during the CHAN trophy tour, Wanyama highlighted the positive changes since Benni McCarthy took charge as head coach.

What Improvements Did Wanyama Notice in the Harambee Stars?

Wanyama emphasized that the team has shown significant progress in its style of play and tactical discipline.
“We have seen a lot of changes since Benni took over the team. The style of play has improved, and we can now build from the back. We can defend well even when we are fewer on the pitch. Even in terms of infrastructure, the government has played a huge role in improving it. So far, things are heading in the right direction,” he said.

Despite the narrow loss to Madagascar, Wanyama believes the performance proved Kenya’s potential. With CHAN allowing only locally based players, he noted that the Stars showed how competitive the Kenyan league can become with proper support and investment.
“People say our league is weak, but we have seen that with proper support from all stakeholders of the game, we can go very far from the performance we have seen in the tournament with our local players,” added Wanyama.

What Did Wanyama Say to the Players Who Missed Penalties?

The former Tottenham midfielder encouraged the players who missed penalties in the quarterfinal to remain focused.
“They need to be proud of the achievements they have done so far. Let them not focus on the negative energy on social media, they have to chin up and focus on building their careers,” Wanyama advised.

The trophy tour, part of CAF’s initiative to connect fans with the tournament, is building momentum ahead of the final on August 30 at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani. The clash will see bronze medalists Madagascar take on two-time champions Morocco in what promises to be a thrilling showdown.
