Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has urged teenage sensation Rio Ngumoha to remain grounded after his historic debut goal sealed a dramatic 3-2 win over Newcastle at St. James’ Park. The 16-year-old became the club’s youngest ever goalscorer on his debut, striking in the 100th minute to secure three crucial points for the Premier League champions.
How Did Ngumoha Change the Game?
Liverpool appeared to be in control after goals from Ryan Gravenberch and Hugo Ekitike gave them a 2-0 advantage, following Anthony Gordon’s red card for Newcastle. However, the Magpies fought back with goals from Bruno Guimaraes and William Osula, capitalizing on set pieces to level the game. With the match headed for a draw, Ngumoha, who had impressed in pre-season, combined with his teammates in stoppage time to deliver the decisive goal.

“It’s a dream debut for him,” Van Dijk said. “I’m very pleased for Rio, I’ve said it to him already,it all starts now, he has to keep working hard and stay humble but definitely have to enjoy this because these nights, you can’t take them for granted if you’re in his position.”
What Was the Atmosphere Like at St. James’ Park?
Tensions were already high due to Liverpool’s interest in Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, who missed the match amid speculation about his future. Van Dijk described the intensity: “We all know it’s a difficult place to come. We know there was a lot of oil on the fire this week to get Newcastle fired up. What happened tonight was expected, and for us, the disappointing part was that we conceded two set pieces. That shouldn’t happen, but overall, great three points.”
The defeat leaves Eddie Howe’s side with just one point from their opening two matches, while the uncertainty around Isak’s situation continues. Howe, however, praised his team’s effort: “I thought we were really good and fought our way back unbelievably well, but couldn’t get over the line to get a point.”
Liverpool, meanwhile, continues their title defense with two wins from two, and Ngumoha’s breakthrough has given fans a glimpse of a potential new star for the future.
