“KSh 10 Million?” Kenyans Taunt Tanzanians after Suluhu’s Gift to Taifa Stars

The Kenya–Tanzania rivalry at CHAN 2024 has spilled from the pitch to social media after Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu gifted the Taifa Stars KSh 10 million ahead of their quarterfinal clash against Morocco. While the cash was meant as motivation, Kenyan fans immediately turned it into banter, comparing it to the more generous pledges made by President William Ruto to Harambee Stars.

How Much Did Suluhu Award Taifa Stars?

President Suluhu announced the KSh 10 million reward as an incentive for the Taifa Stars, adding it to her earlier pledge of KSh 51 million should they win the tournament, plus her signature Fedha ya Mama bonus for every goal scored. The gesture, however, was quickly overshadowed online as Kenyans contrasted it with Ruto’s significantly higher promises.

What Has Ruto Pledged for Harambee Stars?

President Ruto has committed KSh 1 million for every win, KSh 500,000 for a draw, and KSh 2.5 million for the group-stage victory over Zambia. Most notably, he promised a staggering KSh 600 million if the Harambee Stars lift the CHAN 2024 trophy. So far, the team has already pocketed KSh 5 million from its rewards. The difference in presidential pledges fueled a fresh round of banter between fans across both nations.

What Did Kenyans Say Online?

Kenyans quickly took to social platforms with a mix of jokes and mockery directed at their neighbors. One wrote, “Tanzania will go broke trying to prove a point.” Another added, “Huku kwetu KSh 10 million ni ya 4 players only.” Others poked fun at Suluhu for “copying” Ruto’s style of rewarding players, while some joked that a single Kenyan player could afford to pay the entire Tanzanian squad.

The exchanges highlight the lighthearted yet fiery rivalry that continues to define East African football culture. As Harambee Stars prepare to face Madagascar and Taifa Stars take on Morocco, the battle between fans online may prove just as entertaining as the action on the field.
