Harambee Stars’ unbeaten run at the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 has sparked a wave of excitement across Kenya, and actress Serah Teshna believes money is playing a big role in the team’s stellar performances. Teshna, wife to former Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama, says President William Ruto’s financial incentives have given the players the motivation they needed to excel.
Initially, President Ruto promised each player KSh 1 million for every win and KSh 500,000 for a draw. On August 11, he raised the stakes, pledging KSh 2.5 million should the team defeat Zambia in their final group match. So far, the Harambee Stars have beaten DR Congo 1-0, drawn 1-1 with Angola, and edged Morocco 1-0, keeping their unbeaten record intact.
How Big a Role Has Money Played in the Team’s Form?
In a video conversation with Wanyama, Teshna said: “I think you are going to agree with me that the problem with Kenyan football is the money because after these guys were promised KSh 1 million for a win, and KSh 500,000 for a draw, they are performing exceptionally. True or false?” Wanyama replied, “Ah, somehow true, because you know money is everything. It’s a motivation, and motivation is everything. You can see what he has done since he took over.”
When asked if he had expected Harambee Stars to beat Morocco, Wanyama said, “Yes, I expected it to be a very tough game for Morocco, and it was a tough game.” He also praised head coach Benni McCarthy, saying, “We have McCarthy and his tactics paid off.”

The clip drew strong reactions from Kenyans online. While some agreed with Teshna that financial rewards fuel performance, others credited McCarthy’s tactical approach, passionate coaching, and the team’s fan support. One fan wrote, “Yeah, she knows what money can do,” while another said, “It is the coach for me. Benny is the man for the job.” Others highlighted the role of upgraded stadium facilities and the players’ determination as key ingredients in the team’s success.
