Why Has the Government Lowered University Fees in Kenya?
In a major shift to ease the financial burden on students and families, the Ministry of Education has officially reduced the cost of university education across all Kenyan public universities. This announcement was made through a memo from Higher Education Principal Secretary Dr. Beatrice Inyangala, who emphasized that the move was driven by months of consultations with students, the public, and key education stakeholders.

“In direct response to concerns raised by students and their families, the Government has lowered fees payable by students across all academic programmes,” reads the directive addressed to Vice Chancellors and Principals of constituent colleges.

When Will the New University Fees Take Effect?
The updated fee structure will come into effect on September 1, 2025, and will apply to both incoming first-year students and those already enrolled. All public universities are expected to comply with the changes without delay.

“All public universities are further directed to update their admissions and finance portals to reflect the revised fees of academic programmes,” Inyangala instructed. This means students can expect updated information on university websites and portals before the new academic year begins.

How Will the New System Affect University Education in Kenya?
Dr. Inyangala highlighted that the reduced fee structure is part of a larger effort to ensure that university education remains affordable, accessible, and of high quality. Alongside the fee reduction, students will still be expected to cover part of their tuition costs using a combination of loans, scholarships, and personal contributions, depending on their financial needs.

The rationalization is also designed to support the financial sustainability of universities, ensuring that while education becomes more affordable, institutions can still operate effectively and deliver quality services.

This reform marks a significant step toward equitable access to higher education in Kenya, aligning with national development goals and youth empowerment.
