Kenya Leads Global ChatGPT Usage with 42.1% of Internet Users Active Monthly

Why Is Kenya Leading in ChatGPT Adoption?
Kenya has emerged as the global leader in ChatGPT usage, with 42.1% of internet users aged 16 and above engaging with the platform in the past month. This is according to the July 2025 Global Digital Report released by We Are Social and Meltwater. The report places Kenya ahead of global tech-forward nations such as the UAE (42%), Israel (41.4%), Malaysia (39.8%), and Brazil (39.7%).

The surge in usage reflects Kenya’s growing digital culture, driven by mobile-first access, an enthusiastic youth population, and increasing interest in AI-powered productivity tools across education, business, and content creation.

How Does Kenya Compare to Other Countries Globally?
While Kenya tops the chart, countries like the United States (19.1%), the United Kingdom (17.9%), and Japan (5.8%) are seeing significantly lower adoption rates. The disparity suggests differing levels of AI integration and accessibility across regions. In contrast, China’s internet users are pivoting toward a local alternative, Deepseek, which has quickly gained traction and now boasts 75 million monthly users.

What Does This Mean for Kenya’s Digital Future?
Kenya’s top-ranking status signals a powerful shift toward AI literacy and innovation. With young users driving engagement, the country could become a leading hub for AI adoption in Africa and beyond. The rise in ChatGPT usage also underscores a broader trend of digital empowerment, where access to cutting-edge tools is reshaping how people work, learn, and communicate in Kenya.
