13 Dead, Dozens Missing After Overloaded Boat Capsizes in Nigeria’s Niger State

What Happened During the Boat Accident in Niger State?
A tragic boat accident in Niger State, north-central Nigeria, has left at least 13 people dead and dozens more missing. The wooden boat, reportedly carrying around 100 passengers, capsized on Saturday as it traveled toward a local market. Emergency officials confirmed the incident on Sunday.

Yusuf Lemu from the Niger State Emergency Management Agency said 26 people, mainly women and children, were rescued.
Local official Isiyaku Akilu added, “The exact cause of the accident is yet to be determined, but from all indications, it appears to be due to overloading.”
The boat’s driver, who survived the incident, was unable to confirm the exact number of passengers onboard at the time of the capsizing.

Was the Boat Overloaded and What Are the Rescue Efforts Like?
Adamu Ahmad, a representative of the boat drivers’ union, confirmed that the vessel was overloaded.
He explained that it was a large wooden boat, and teams are working to retrieve more bodies from the river. The search and rescue operation briefly paused on Sunday as local customs required the river’s custodian to perform rituals aimed at ensuring a smooth recovery mission.

This disaster echoes a similar tragedy that occurred just nine months ago when another boat, also carrying mostly women and children returning from a religious festival, capsized in the same region, killing over 60 people.

Why Are Boat Accidents Common in This Region?
Niger State is home to three of Nigeria’s major hydroelectric dams, and boat travel is a common mode of transport across its vast waterways. However, poorly regulated operations, overcrowded vessels, and limited access to life jackets contribute to frequent and deadly accidents.

Authorities continue recovery operations, but the exact number of missing persons remains unclear. The incident once again highlights the urgent need for better regulation and enforcement of safety standards in Nigeria’s inland water transport sector.
