Brazil is moving to formally join South Africa’s case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), where Israel is accused of committing genocide in Gaza. The announcement, made on Wednesday by Brazil’s foreign ministry, puts the South American country among a growing list of nations, including Colombia, Libya, and Mexico, that have already joined or supported the legal action.
What is the Genocide Case About?
The legal case, initiated by South Africa in December 2023, alleges that Israel’s ongoing military campaign in Gaza violates the 1948 UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. The ICJ has already issued multiple rulings in 2024, instructing Israel to take all measures to prevent genocide and to ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid to Palestinians to avert widespread famine.
Israel firmly denies all accusations and maintains that its actions are in self-defense, citing the October 7, 2023, attack by Hamas militants on Israeli territory that triggered the war.
Why Is Brazil Intervening Now?
Brazil’s foreign ministry cited “indiscriminate violence” and the “blatant use of hunger as a weapon of war” as key reasons for its intervention. “The international community cannot remain inert in the face of ongoing atrocities,” the ministry stated. President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has consistently condemned Israel’s conduct, referring to it as “genocide” in previous remarks.
What Are Global Reactions to Israel’s Actions in Gaza?
As fighting continues, so does international condemnation. Over 100 aid and human rights organizations have warned that “mass starvation” is taking hold in Gaza. The situation has sparked global debate over Israel’s humanitarian obligations during conflict, as well as the effectiveness of international mechanisms like the ICJ in curbing potential war crimes.
The Genocide Convention, under which the case is being pursued, defines genocide as any of five acts committed with “intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial or religious group.” Brazil’s decision to join the case adds weight to the mounting international scrutiny of Israel’s Gaza campaign.
