Comedian Zakaria Kariuki, popularly known as KK Mwenyewe, has died following a short illness, leaving Kenyans shocked and heartbroken. The 24-year-old content creator passed away on Monday night at Kiambu Level 4 Hospital, as confirmed by fellow comedian and close friend Kafengo.

Why was KK Mwenyewe loved by many?

KK rose to fame by masterfully imitating former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. His impersonations were so spot-on that some fans jokingly believed the two were related. “When the video went viral, many insisted that Rigathi is my father, and I even got confused for a moment thinking it was true. I called my mother and asked her, ‘Are you sure that my father is my father, have you ever gone to Nyeri?’” he once said with a laugh. His unique brand of satire struck a chord with Kenyans who appreciated both his wit and bold commentary.

His impersonations didn’t just entertain; they held up a mirror to society with wit and honesty. Losing him is a great loss for comedy and for all who found joy in his work. I just wish Gachagua had met him. May he rest in peace, and may his legacy continue to inspire future storytellers.”

Risperiolla Mbaka added, “Aaai may his soul rest in peace. He was best in acting as Wamunyoro…this life though, sad they never met.” Others like Joshua Mars and Mirriam James shared their sadness, with Mirriam writing, “This is unbelievable meehn from Wirekererie live at Kisii University omg this is one of my saddest mornings tho.”

KK’s short but impactful career left an undeniable mark on Kenya’s comedy scene. His viral skits and sharp impersonations sparked laughter while highlighting everyday societal issues. Many fans, entertainers, and Kenyans at large now reflect not just on what he gave the world, but also on what could have been, especially the long-anticipated moment between KK and the man he portrayed so well, Rigathi Gachagua.
