Luis Enrique Gears Up for ‘Special’ PSG vs Real Madrid Club World Cup Clash

PSG head coach Luis Enrique.

How is PSG preparing for the Real Madrid showdown?

Paris Saint-Germain head coach Luis Enrique says Wednesday’s Club World Cup semi-final against Real Madrid will be “special,” as the newly crowned European champions look to edge closer to another major title. Speaking from the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, Enrique emphasized the significance of the match: “Playing against Real Madrid is always a special game,” he said. “We are delighted to be playing in a game like this because it means we have done a good job up to now.”

PSG arrived in the United States on a high, having clinched their first-ever UEFA Champions League title. This tournament marks the next chapter in their journey, one that comes with extra emotional weight following Kylian Mbappe’s move to Real Madrid. Enrique managed Mbappe in his final season at PSG, a turbulent year defined by contract disputes and limited appearances for the French superstar.

“All I can say is that belongs in the past, it is behind us now,” Enrique commented when asked about his past relationship with Mbappe.

What challenges is PSG facing ahead of the semi-final?

The Parisian side will be without defenders Willian Pacho and Lucas Hernandez, both suspended following red cards in their dramatic quarter-final win over Bayern Munich. Still, Enrique is focused on the task ahead. “This game is important because it is a Club World Cup semi-final. That makes it very interesting and we need to be ready to remain focused on the match. We are very close to playing another final and that is a true motivation.”

Real Madrid, meanwhile, enters the tournament under new leadership. Xabi Alonso is taking charge for the first time on the global stage, ushering in a new era for the most decorated club in football history. Travel delays due to severe weather in Florida prevented Alonso from speaking to the press, but expectations remain high.

Why does Luis Enrique respect Real Madrid despite past rivalries?

“For me, it has always been a pleasure to play against Real Madrid, and it always will be,” he said. “They are the most decorated club in the world and Xabi has everything required to take on the challenge.”

The winner of Wednesday night’s clash will meet Chelsea in Sunday’s final. The English side secured their spot after defeating Fluminense 2-0 in the first semi-final.
