What Did Diana Marua Say About the June 25 Protests?
Diana Marua, digital content creator and wife to singer Bahati, has come under fire for posting a message of empathy for families affected by police brutality during the June 25 memorial protests. Sharing a photo of the Kenyan flag, Diana wrote:
“Our hearts go out to the families we lost on a day like this last year. May God give you strength that surpasses your understanding. As we remember them on this special memorial, please keep safe and be your brother’s keeper. Dear fellow countrymen and women, this dark cloud above us shall pass. It shall be well.”

Her message, however, did not sit well with a section of Kenyans online, who felt it lacked sincerity due to her history of remaining neutral during major social movements. In 2024, Diana had also received criticism for not participating in the anti-Finance Bill protests, later sharing an emotional hospital video where she explained that illness had kept her from joining demonstrators in the streets.

Why Are Kenyans Criticizing Diana Marua Now?
Despite her latest show of solidarity, many Kenyans felt her response came too late and lacked the authenticity of those who took risks during the protests. Some accused her of using her platform only when it was convenient or safe, without actually showing up for causes that affect the public.

One user, @danielledayn12, questioned her credibility: “I remember last year ulisema uko msick, leo excuse ni gani?”
@wanjiru_kihia added: “Can we just unfollow and unsubscribe. Simple!”
Another user, @this_girl_barbie_ _, commented: “Umeamua kuongea last minute 🤭 anyway you know karma walks around so sooner or later.”
Others, like @nae_soita, were blunt: “You are not one of us.”
@Julianmwende2019 remarked: “Saa hii ndio umeamua kuweka bendera yako hapa yet all that time tumekuwa tukilia even for Ojwang you were silent, tunawaona.”

Why Is This Backlash Significant in Kenyan Pop Culture?
Diana and Bahati have previously faced accusations of being non-committal on critical national issues. While many Kenyan artists, like Khaligraph Jones and Arrow Bwoy, have physically shown up in the streets and spoken boldly against injustices, the couple’s silence during heated political moments has sparked disappointment among younger fans seeking more vocal and visible leadership.

In contrast, artists who have risked police violence to stand with the public, some even getting teargassed or assaulted, have earned praise and increased grassroots support. The backlash toward Diana underscores a growing expectation in Kenya’s digital culture: influencers and celebrities are being called to stand for more than just brand deals and music; they’re being asked to show up when it counts.
