Chad Suspends U.S. Visas in Response to Trump’s New Travel Ban

Chad President Mahamat Idriss Derby

In a bold move that’s caught global attention, Chad has officially suspended all visa services for U.S. citizens. President Mahamat Idriss Déby announced on Thursday, stating the decision was based on “reciprocity” after former U.S. President Donald Trump reinstated a controversial travel ban affecting 19 countries, Chad included.

“I have directed the government to follow the principle of reciprocity and halt visa issuance to U.S. citizens,” said President Déby. “Chad may not have planes or billions, but we have our dignity and pride.”

The suspension came just hours after Trump revealed that the new travel ban would take effect at 12:01 a.m. on Monday. The ban blocks entry to the U.S. from 12 countries entirely and places strict restrictions on seven others. The countries facing a full ban include Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, the Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen.

Meanwhile, visitors from Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela will now be subjected to more intensive screening and visa restrictions.

The African Union quickly responded with concern, saying it was deeply worried about the diplomatic and humanitarian consequences of the new U.S. travel policy. Many African leaders and citizens have criticized the ban, calling it unfair and harmful to global cooperation.

Chad’s reaction highlights a growing frustration among African nations who feel they are being unfairly targeted by Western policies. While the U.S. may have its reasons, countries like Chad are now taking a stand to protect their sovereignty and send a clear message: respect must go both ways.
