Madaraka Day is usually a time to celebrate Kenya’s journey to self-rule, but for many people who attended this year’s national event in Homa Bay, the experience turned into a nightmare.
During the 62nd Madaraka Day celebration at the Raila Odinga Stadium, over 100 mobile phones were stolen in a series of coordinated thefts. The event, which attracted thousands of people from across the country, quickly became a hotspot for pickpockets who took advantage of the large crowds and chaotic entry points.
Homa Bay County Police Commander Lawrence Koilem confirmed that two suspects had been arrested in connection with the thefts. By Sunday evening, police had already recovered 12 stolen phones and a wallet from the suspects.

According to police, most of the thefts happened at night as people were entering the stadium. The suspects are believed to have caused confusion near the gates, forcing people to shuffle from side to side. In the middle of the crowd chaos, phones, wallets, and other valuables were stolen.
Even journalists were not spared. George Odiwuor, a correspondent for Nation Media Group in Homa Bay, lost his phone at the entrance of the stadium. Another journalist had their laptop stolen while trying to get in. These incidents show just how organized the criminals were and how vulnerable people were in the packed venue.
The police believe there could be more people involved and are still investigating. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is now handling the case.
Koilem urged anyone who lost a phone or any valuables during the celebrations to visit the nearest police station and report. “People should come forward and help us identify recovered items,” he said.
