Mogadishu City Club has apologised after a section of its supporters were filmed desecrating the Kenyan national flag during their 3-1 defeat to Kenya Police FC in the CAF Champions League preliminaries at Nyayo National Stadium on September 20.

In a statement, the Somali side described the incident as unacceptable and contrary to the spirit of football.

“During the CAF Champions League first-leg match between Mogadishu City Club and Kenya Police FC, an unfortunate incident occurred in which a few young fans were seen kicking the Kenyan national flag. On behalf of the Mogadishu City Club, we strongly condemn this act and extend our deepest apologies to the government and people of Kenya. Such behaviour has no place in football or in the spirit of friendship and sportsmanship that this competition represents,” the club said.

Why did the incident spark outrage?

The apology came after videos circulated online showing fans laying the Kenyan flag on the ground and stepping on it, sparking anger among Kenyans. The National Flag, Emblems and Names Act (Cap. 99) protects the flag from insult or abuse, with offenders facing up to six months in prison, a fine of Sh5,000, or both.

The club further urged supporters to embrace peace and respect, adding: “We fully support any appropriate action by the Kenyan authorities against those involved, and we urge our fans, especially the younger generation, to always respect all nations, their flags, and their people. Football is a game of unity, love, and mutual respect, and we call on all supporters to uphold these values and promote peace and harmony in our communities.”

The controversy overshadowed what had been a thrilling clash on the pitch. Kenya Police FC sealed a commanding first-leg victory with goals from Eric Zakayo, Edward Omondi, and David Simiyu. The win gave Police a vital edge ahead of the second leg, set for Sunday at Nyayo National Stadium.
