Ballon D’Or 2025: Ousmane Dembele Expected to Edge Out Yamal and Raphinha in Ballon d’Or Battle

Paris Saint-Germain forward Ousmane Dembele is on track to edge out Barcelona’s teenage star Lamine Yamal for the Ballon d’Or. The football world gathers tonight at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris for the ceremony that has historically been dominated by Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, who won the award 13 times between 2008 and 2023.

Last year’s winner, Manchester City’s Rodri, is not in contention this time due to an injury-hit season, leaving the stage open for Dembele. The 28-year-old produced a sensational campaign for PSG, scoring 35 goals and stepping into the role left vacant by Kylian Mbappe’s departure. His contributions guided the club to a domestic treble and a historic Champions League triumph, capped by a 5-0 win over Inter Milan.

“It is nice after what was a wonderful season with PSG,” Dembele told Le Monde. “I think it’s true that I am one of the favourites, but we will see what happens.”

Could Yamal Challenge Dembele for the Ballon d’Or?

At just 18 years old, Lamine Yamal remains one of the most exciting challengers. The Barcelona winger netted 18 goals in 55 appearances last season, helping the club secure La Liga and the Copa del Rey titles. He also played a crucial role in Spain’s European Championship success and already boasts the Kopa Trophy, awarded to the best player under 21. “I don’t dream of winning one Ballon d’Or, I dream of winning lots,” Yamal said.

In the women’s category, Spain’s Aitana Bonmati is aiming for her third consecutive award. Despite losing the UEFA Women’s Euro final to England and the Champions League final with Barcelona, her influence as player of the tournament keeps her firmly in the race. England’s Euro-winning squad members, including Lucy Bronze, Alessia Russo, and Leah Williamson, are also contenders, though without a single standout candidate.

The Ballon d’Or remains football’s most prestigious individual prize, with winners decided by journalists from the top 100 FIFA-ranked countries for men and the top 50 for women.
