Kenya’s athletics officials have bowed to public pressure, announcing that medalists from the World Athletics Championships will now travel in business class. The decision comes after widespread criticism over Olympic champion Peres Jepchirchir being spotted seated in economy class despite her gold medal victory.

What sparked the public uproar?

The controversy erupted when Citizen Digital shared a video on Tuesday showing Jepchirchir on an economy seat while returning from Tokyo. The marathon champion had just delivered a sensational win against Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa, securing Kenya’s pride on the global stage. Many Kenyans felt that her treatment was disrespectful to an athlete who had brought glory to the country, sparking heated discussions online.

How did the government respond?

Following the backlash, the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports quickly announced changes to its travel policy. Evans Achoki, Secretary for Administration at the State Department for Sports, confirmed that all medalists will now enjoy business class travel. “The travel arrangements have been done and we intend to fly all the medalists in business class… so that they can be rewarded for their good performance and we believe this will motivate them to work harder,” Achoki stated.

The decision is viewed as a long-overdue recognition of Kenya’s sporting heroes, who consistently elevate the nation’s image worldwide. For years, athletes have raised concerns about inadequate support despite their international success. This new policy not only restores dignity to champions like Jepchirchir but also signals a shift towards valuing athletes as national treasures deserving respect, comfort, and proper recognition.

With the new travel arrangements, medalists will now return home celebrated in a manner that matches their world-class achievements.
