Liverpool striker Hugo Ekitike says he is excited about the arrival of Alexander Isak, stressing that he is ready for the challenge of competing with the British record signing for a place in the starting eleven.
Ekitike, who became Liverpool’s third-most expensive signing of the summer, praised the Swedish forward’s quality and insisted that such competition is what defines top clubs. “When you play for the best teams, you inevitably expect to be competing with the best players,” he told reporters on Sunday. “Isak is a player I used to watch, so seeing him arrive is a pleasure. It’s going to be tough competition, but I’m going to work hard to be good and perform well so that it’s just the coach’s problem.”
How Much Did Liverpool Spend on Isak and Wirtz?
Liverpool signed Isak from Newcastle United for a reported £125 million ($168.93 million), setting a new British transfer record. They also secured German midfielder Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen in a deal worth £100 million plus bonuses. These moves highlight the reigning Premier League champions’ intent to strengthen their squad further as they look to defend both domestic and European titles.

How Has Ekitike Performed So Far?
The 22-year-old French striker has hit the ground running, scoring three goals in his first four appearances for Liverpool. His form builds on an impressive 2024-25 season with Eintracht Frankfurt, where he netted 15 goals in 33 Bundesliga games before making the switch to England.
The addition of Isak and Wirtz signals fiercer competition for starting spots, with Ekitike determined to prove his value. Liverpool’s depth in attack now gives manager Jürgen Klopp more tactical flexibility, while also pushing players to consistently perform at their peak.
