All boarding schools in Gatundu, Kiambu County, have been closed following a wave of unrest linked to arson attacks allegedly planned by students through social media. The closure comes at a critical time, with national examinations approaching, leaving parents and education officials alarmed about the impact on learners.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the attacks were meticulously organized during the recent school holidays, with Instagram used as a primary platform for coordination. Authorities linked the disturbances to grievances over strict frisking rules at reopening, rigid examination regulations, and demands to adjust school reporting hours to between noon and 4 p.m.

Why Were Gatundu Boarding Schools Closed?

Gatundu South MP Gabriel Kagombe confirmed that 29 schools had been shut down to allow for thorough investigations and to prevent further damage. “We have experienced multiple fire incidents, and therefore, we have agreed that all boarding students should go home to allow thorough investigations to identify the masterminds behind these acts,” Kagombe said.

How Many Students Have Been Arrested?

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has taken over the case, with at least 25 students arrested in connection with the incidents. Investigators are focusing on coded messages believed to have been shared on social media platforms to plan and execute the attacks. The arrested students are expected to be arraigned in court on Monday, September 8.

The closures have sparked anxiety among parents and education stakeholders. “We are worried about our children’s safety and education, especially with exams so close,” said Peninah Mburu, a parent at one of the affected schools.

A high-level crisis meeting has been scheduled to find long-term solutions and preventive measures. Education leaders are expected to deliberate on strategies to restore normalcy while ensuring the safety of learners as the exam season nears.
