Arsenal Sign Piero Hincapie on Loan from Bayer Leverkusen

Arsenal have confirmed the signing of Ecuadorian defender Piero Hincapie on a season-long loan from Bayer Leverkusen. The deal includes an option to make the move permanent at the end of the campaign for £45 million.

What does Piero Hincapie bring to Arsenal?

Hincapie, 23, arrives after making more than 100 appearances for Leverkusen, where he was instrumental in their Bundesliga title win in 2023–24. Known for his ability to play across the backline, he gives Arsenal fresh depth and versatility in defense.

Manager Mikel Arteta praised the signing, saying:
“We are so pleased to welcome Piero Hincapie to the club. He has a real physical presence, with his versatility and tactical flexibility giving us strong added defensive options. He is a big character, with a very good combination of both youth and maturity. He will make our squad stronger and more competitive as we continue into this season. We welcome Piero and his family to Arsenal.”

Hincapie will wear the number five shirt and is expected to link up with the squad once his international duties with Ecuador conclude.

How does this fit into Arsenal’s transfer strategy?

The defender is Arteta’s eighth signing since last season. Other arrivals include Viktor Gyokeres, Martin Zubimendi, Christian Norgaard, Noni Madueke, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Cristhian Mosquera, and Eberechi Eze. The club’s aggressive recruitment drive highlights a clear intention to build depth and competition across all positions.

What is Hincapie’s international experience?

Hincapie has earned 46 caps for Ecuador and represented his country in major tournaments, including the 2022 World Cup and the Copa America in 2021 and 2024. His international pedigree, combined with top-flight European experience, makes him a strong addition to Arsenal’s evolving backline.
