Manchester City have confirmed the signing of Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain, just as long-serving Brazilian shot-stopper Ederson completed a move to Fenerbahce.

Why did Man City move for Donnarumma?

Donnarumma, 26, signed a five-year contract with City for a reported £26 million. He will wear the number 99 shirt at the Etihad. The Italian played a key role in PSG’s Champions League triumph last season and was Italy’s starting goalkeeper when they lifted Euro 2020.

His exit from PSG became clear when he was omitted from their Super Cup squad following the arrival of Lucas Chevalier from Lille. Reflecting on the move, Donnarumma said:
“To have signed for Manchester City is such a special and proud moment for me. I am joining a squad packed with world-class talent and a team led by one of the greatest managers in the history of football in Pep Guardiola. This is a club every player in world football would love to join.”

City’s director of football, Hugo Viana, described the signing as a major boost for the squad. “Gianluigi’s pedigree, quality and record speak for themselves, and we are all absolutely thrilled he has joined us here at City,” he said.

How will City replace Ederson?

Ederson leaves after eight years at Manchester City, where he won six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, and the Champions League in 2023. He made 372 appearances in all competitions, keeping 122 clean sheets in 276 league matches.

“You helped us make history,” City posted on social media alongside images of the Brazilian celebrating trophies. The 32-year-old shared his own farewell, saying:
“I arrived in Manchester eight years ago full of hope, but I could not have predicted such a beautiful time together. Playing for City has been the most special time of my life and I will always be a fan of this special club.”

What next for Manchester City’s goalkeeping lineup?

Alongside Donnarumma, City signed James Trafford from Burnley earlier in the summer, but the English goalkeeper has yet to impress. Donnarumma’s arrival now strengthens Guardiola’s options in goal as City aim to bounce back from a poor start to the season.

The club also confirmed that Swiss defender Manuel Akanji has joined Inter Milan on a season-long loan, marking another notable exit from the squad.
