“I Don’t Want to Talk about It”Benni McCarthy on Austin Odhiambo’s Omission

Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy has remained tight-lipped over Austin Odhiambo’s exclusion from Kenya’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Gambia and Seychelles. The decision sparked questions among fans, but McCarthy stood firm while addressing the media during the team’s first training session at Utalii Grounds in Nairobi.

Why Was Austin Odhiambo Left Out?

Odhiambo, who only featured in the first two matches of Kenya’s CHAN 2024 campaign before being dropped, was once again overlooked in the latest call-up. McCarthy avoided direct explanations but stressed the need for balance between local and foreign-based players.

“The boys have done incredibly well, and I was very tempted to almost select everybody to the internationals, but I don’t think that would be fair,” McCarthy explained. “Foreign clubs work hard, expect their players to be selected, so we had to balance the books depending on positions. Unfortunately, we were hampered by quite a few late injuries.”

Among the players ruled out are Jonah Ayunga (St. Mirren FC), Amos Nondi (Ararat Armenia), Joseph Okumu (Stade Reims), and Eric Marcelo Ouma.

Can Kenya Still Push for Qualification?

Despite the setbacks, McCarthy remains optimistic. “All the Kenyan players, whether local or abroad, we monitor their progress. In football, surprises happen. Teams like the Ivory Coast and Gabon have been doing well, but anything can change. If you win your remaining matches, you put yourself back in contention. That’s why we pick the strongest squad possible.”

Captain Michael Olunga echoed his coach’s belief after jetting in on Monday. “Gambia are a strong team with quality players, but right now the squad is motivated, spirits are high, and fans are gearing up to support us. We want to replicate the good performance from CHAN,” he said.

What Lies Ahead for Harambee Stars?

Kenya will face The Gambia on Friday, September 5, before hosting Seychelles on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani. Both matches kick off at 4:00 pm EAT.

The qualifiers are entering a decisive stage. Group winners will secure automatic World Cup slots, while the four best runners-up advance to a playoff for a chance at the FIFA intercontinental play-off. Kenya sits fourth with 6 points, trailing Ivory Coast (16), Gabon (15), and Burundi (10). While direct qualification looks difficult, McCarthy has urged the “12th man” to rally behind the team as they fight to finish strong.
