Liverpool have officially secured Newcastle striker Alexander Isak in a stunning British-record £125 million transfer, ending one of the most intense sagas of the Premier League window. The 25-year-old Sweden international has signed a six-year contract and becomes the centerpiece of Arne Slot’s ambitious squad rebuild.
Why Did Alexander Isak Leave Newcastle?
The road to Anfield was not smooth. Liverpool’s initial £110 million bid in August was rejected, but Isak made clear his desire to leave. He skipped parts of pre-season with Newcastle, choosing instead to train at his former club Real Sociedad. The forward also accused Newcastle’s management of breaking a promise that he could move if a top offer arrived.
Eddie Howe fought to keep his star after a season in which Isak netted 27 goals in 42 matches, secured Champions League qualification, and lifted the League Cup, Newcastle’s first major trophy in 56 years. However, the Magpies’ move for Stuttgart striker Nick Woltemade opened the door for Isak’s departure.
What Does This Record-Breaking Deal Mean for Liverpool?
Isak’s arrival takes Liverpool’s post-season spending to £416 million, smashing Chelsea’s previous record of £400 million in 2023. Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, Giorgi Mamardashvili, Armin Pecsi, and Giovanni Leoni have all joined Isak in Slot’s new-look squad.
The record fee also surpasses Chelsea’s £107 million signing of Enzo Fernández last year, highlighting Liverpool’s determination to dominate both the Premier League and Europe.

Can Isak Fire Liverpool to Back-to-Back Titles?
Isak joins Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo, Federico Chiesa, Wirtz, and Ekitike in what could be the most formidable forward line in England. Liverpool are already top of the league after three straight wins, including a narrow 1-0 victory over Arsenal.
With Isak leading the attack, Slot faces the challenge of delivering not only another league title but also Liverpool’s seventh Champions League crown. Success this season would make Liverpool the most decorated side in English top-flight history with 21 titles.
“I feel amazing,” Isak told Liverpool’s website. “It’s been a long journey to get here. But I’m super-happy to be a part of this team, this club, and everything it stands for.”
