Tanzania Eliminated After Heartbreaking Defeat to Morocco

Tanzania’s run at CHAN 2024 came to an end after a 1-0 loss to Morocco in the quarterfinals at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam. Despite a spirited performance, the Taifa Stars were undone by a single second-half goal.

The opening half was evenly contested, with both teams trading cautious plays. Clement Mzize attempted an acrobatic shot around the 30-minute mark, but it failed to trouble Morocco’s defense. Just before halftime, Mzize found himself one-on-one with Morocco’s goalkeeper Elmehdi Al Harrar, but the Raja Athletic Club shot-stopper stood tall, making a comfortable save to keep the game goalless.

How Did Tanzania Perform Against Morocco?

The second half demanded sharp focus from Tanzania’s goalkeeper, Yakoub Suleiman. In the 50th minute, he denied Oussama Lamlioui in a one-on-one situation just outside the box, then blocked the rebound effort. Two minutes later, Suleiman pulled off another crucial save from a close-range header after a free-kick, keeping Tanzania alive as Morocco piled on pressure.

Morocco finally found a breakthrough in the 65th minute. Youssef Belammari delivered a precise cross, and Lamlioui tapped it in to put the Atlas Lions ahead. The goal was Lamlioui’s fourth of the tournament, solidifying his position as the leading contender for the Golden Boot.

What Does This Result Mean?

After taking the lead, Morocco controlled possession and limited Tanzania to half-chances. The Taifa Stars pushed for an equalizer but struggled to break down a disciplined Moroccan defense. With the narrow win, Morocco advanced to the semi-finals, while Tanzania bowed out of the tournament with pride after battling toe-to-toe with one of the tournament’s favorites.
