“Mr. President, We Are Also Your Children”: Malkia Strikers Cry for Support Ahead of World Championships

Kenya’s national women’s volleyball team, the Malkia Strikers, has issued an emotional appeal to President William Ruto as they prepare for their opening match against Germany at the World Championships in Thailand.

Speaking on behalf of her teammates, Captain Meldina Sande urged the head of state to stand with them during a difficult period. “Mr. President, we are also your children; motivate us,” she said, capturing the frustration felt within the squad.

What Challenges Have the Malkia Strikers Faced?

The team began preparations with 29 players, who were paid allowances during the first three weeks of non-residential training. After the squad was trimmed to 20, however, residential training failed to begin on time. Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) Deputy President Paul Bitok informed the players that there were no funds to support residential sessions.

“Instead, we were forced to continue for another week in non-residential training despite the calendar having been released last year. We thought preparations were in place,” explained Pamela Adhiambo.

Only when the squad was cut down to 16 did residential training finally commence, supported mainly by affiliate sponsors. Even then, players reported repeated delays whenever they raised concerns about allowances or logistics. “Every time we asked for something, we were told, ‘Tomorrow.’ We kept waiting for this tomorrow that never came,” Adhiambo said.

The players revealed that they left for Thailand without official training kits or playing jerseys from the Federation. This raised questions about how sponsorship funds were being managed. Adhiambo added that despite meeting Sports CS Salim Mvurya before their departure, the federation stopped them from airing their grievances, insisting everything had been resolved.

How Are the Strikers Responding to Setbacks?

Despite the challenges, the team has vowed to give their all on the court. “We are tired of fake promises. We have been struggling, but we will still play against Germany,” said Adhiambo, standing alongside her teammates.

The Strikers remain determined to raise Kenya’s flag high in Thailand, even as they continue to push for accountability and the support they deserve.
