Quickmart Supermarket has suspended employees linked to a widely shared video showing two customers accusing staff at its Buruburu branch of abuse and physical assault over a milk purchase gone wrong.
In the viral clip, a woman explains how she and her brother visited the supermarket’s milk ATM. Finding no teller on duty, they assumed it was a self-service setup. After making payment and receiving a receipt, they began filling their container with milk. As they attempted to exit, a teller stopped them and questioned their actions.
What triggered the alleged assault at Quickmart Buruburu?
The situation escalated when the two were taken to the branch manager, who allegedly accused them of stealing 57 litres of milk. The customers claim they were dragged into a storage area and physically assaulted. According to the video, the manager also confiscated one of their phones and demanded that the videos taken during the altercation be deleted.
Their father was called to the store and asked to pay for the alleged missing milk. He refused, arguing that his children were the ones mistreated. The matter was later reported to the police. The family alleges that officers disclosed the manager has a record of falsely accusing customers of petty theft.
How has Quickmart responded to the public backlash?
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Quickmart said: “At Quickmart, our brand values are founded on respect, kindness, and integrity. We do not condone any behavior that undermines these principles.” The supermarket confirmed the suspension of staff members involved and said a full investigation was underway in collaboration with relevant authorities.
The incident has sparked widespread online criticism and renewed public scrutiny of how customer complaints are handled by major retailers in Kenya.
