Ruto, Museveni Sign 8 Landmark Deals to Boost Kenya-Uganda Trade and Development

Kenya and Uganda have deepened their long-standing relationship after President William Ruto and President Yoweri Museveni signed eight major Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) aimed at accelerating joint development across key sectors. The signing took place at the State House, Nairobi, where both leaders underscored the importance of regional cooperation in transforming livelihoods and boosting economic progress.

The MOUs cover Mining, Transport, Quality Assurance, Agriculture, Fisheries, Urban Development, Tourism, and Trade. These agreements signal a strategic shift toward resolving long-standing bottlenecks, particularly non-tariff barriers that have stifled the movement of goods and services across borders.

What’s the plan for transport and trade routes?

President Ruto emphasized the urgency of enhancing regional infrastructure, noting that the two countries agreed to extend the transport corridor from Kenya to the Central African Republic and the Democratic Republic of Congo. This includes the railway expansion from Naivasha, which Ruto confirmed will kick off before the year ends.

To further support cross-border commerce, the two leaders also launched plans to upgrade urban infrastructure in the Busia metropolitan area by 2028. “This will entail building infrastructure in Busia and expanding the markets since it is shared between Kenya and Uganda,” Ruto explained.

How are Kenya and Uganda tackling cross-border issues?

Joint mineral exploitation is among the standout initiatives in the new deals. The goal is to combat illegal mineral smuggling across borders by launching cooperative exploration and regulatory frameworks. Meanwhile, both countries will boost knowledge-sharing and training in the blue economy, ensuring they tap into marine resources more efficiently.

What’s in store for tourism and agriculture?

Ruto and Museveni also committed to revitalizing the tourism sector by encouraging cultural exchanges and promoting eco-tourism experiences that can benefit both countries. On food security, the two sides agreed to strengthen agricultural systems and provide better cushioning for farmers, ensuring stable production and supply.

This strategic alliance sets the tone for stronger East African economic integration and cooperation, paving the way for shared growth and regional prosperity.
