The Kenyan government is launching a major employment initiative aimed at supporting vulnerable and unemployed youth across the country. Dubbed the National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) Project, the program will offer over 820,000 young people, including those with disabilities, paid work placements, skills training, and recognition of prior learning certifications.
Backed by the World Bank, NYOTA is scheduled to launch in August 2025 and will run under the government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda. The goal is clear: to reduce youth unemployment by increasing access to practical job experience, entrepreneurship support, and verified skill recognition.
What is the NYOTA Project Offering?
NYOTA is structured into three main components:
Paid on-the-job training
Entrepreneurship development
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) certification
For the job training stream, 90,000 youth will be selected for three to six-month placements with employers. Participants will receive a monthly stipend of Ksh.6,000, which will be deposited into their Haba Haba savings accounts. According to the Cabinet dispatch, “The ongoing call for the on-the-job experience programme targets 90,000 youth for three to six months paid placements with employers, with monthly stipends of Ksh.6,000 deposited into Haba Haba savings accounts.”
When and How Can You Apply?
Applications for the on-the-job experience component are open from July 11 to August 15, 2025. Over one million submissions have already been received, signaling strong demand and nationwide interest in the initiative.
The project also aims to expand support for youth entrepreneurs and small-scale traders while providing targeted assistance to women. These programs are intended to build sustainable career paths and reduce dependency on short-term jobs.
Why Does This Matter Now?
Unemployment continues to rise sharply in Kenya, especially among youth. In 2024, the World Bank estimated the national youth unemployment rate at 5.7%, while the Federation of Kenya Employers (FKE) reports that over one million youth enter the labor market each year without formal skills or a clear professional path.
With youth making up more than 35% of Kenya’s population, NYOTA presents a timely intervention to bridge the gap between education, skill development, and employment opportunities. The initiative is not just about creating jobs; it’s about building careers, financial inclusion, and long-term economic participation.
If you’re a young Kenyan looking for meaningful work experience or entrepreneurial guidance, NYOTA might just be the opportunity worth seizing.
