What Is Fueling the Chieftaincy Conflict in Northern Ghana?
Ghana has ramped up its military presence in the northeastern town of Bawku to address intensifying violence rooted in a longstanding chieftaincy dispute. According to presidential spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the deployment follows deadly incidents linked to the feud between the Mamprusi and Kusaasi ethnic groups, who have clashed for decades over which group holds the right to install a local chief.

The Bawku chieftaincy conflict is one of Ghana’s most persistent ethnic tensions, often igniting violent outbreaks and claiming lives. Although notable mediation efforts, led by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, had “almost brought finality to the conflict,” Ofosu stated that recent killings had “necessitated drastic actions” to contain the unrest.

What Sparked the Latest Military Intervention?
Tensions escalated dramatically last week when gunmen stormed school compounds and killed three high school students. Local media also reported the assassination of a Kusaasi chief, heightening fears across the region and triggering a strong response from the government.

While Ofosu did not disclose the exact number of soldiers being sent, some troops were already stationed in the area near Ghana’s border with Burkina Faso. The lack of official figures reflects growing security concerns, with officials exercising caution in releasing operational details.

What Measures Has the Government Taken to Restore Calm?
In addition to reinforcing troop numbers, the government has announced a strict curfew.“A curfew would be in place from 1400 GMT until 0600 GMT until further notice,” Ofosu confirmed. The restriction aims to restore law and order while enabling authorities to carry out critical tasks, including the safe evacuation of students from areas of volatility.

The situation in Bawku remains tense, with local and national leaders under pressure to implement lasting solutions that address the roots of the conflict and ensure peace for all communities involved.
