Diogo Jota’s Wife Breaks Silence with Emotional Tribute on Wedding Anniversary

Just one month after losing her husband, Diogo Jota, in a tragic car crash, Rute Cardoso has spoken publicly for the first time. The heartbreaking moment came on what would have been their first wedding anniversary.

Cardoso took to social media to share a deeply emotional post, writing, “1 month of our ‘until death do us part.’ Forever. Your white girl.” The post included three touching photos from their wedding day at the Gondomar Catholic Church, which took place just 11 days before the fatal accident.

Jota, a beloved Liverpool forward, and his brother Andre Silva died in a fiery crash in northwest Spain. Spanish authorities confirmed Jota was likely behind the wheel when their Lamborghini, reportedly speeding to overtake another vehicle, blew a tire and crashed. The car burst into flames, leaving the football world in mourning.

What Happened to Diogo Jota?

The incident shocked fans worldwide. Diogo Jota, only weeks into married life and a father of three, was lost in an instant. Videos from the funeral showed Cardoso in anguish, resting her head on Jota’s coffin as she helped carry it through the courtyard. Their three children, Dinis, Duarte, and 8-month-old Mafalda, are left with the memory of a father deeply loved both at home and on the pitch.

How Are Fans Responding?

Support has poured in online. One fan, Catarina, offered words of comfort: “Everything will be alright, time heals everything, and believe me, these aren’t just empty words. We’re all with you.”
Another, Pratik Mehta, wrote, “You, your kids, and Diogo are always in our prayers and thoughts. Never think you are alone.”
And Danny L4 added, “Your husband was an incredible man. Forever with us. Keep his flame burning in your incredible children. YNWA.”

How Is Liverpool Honoring Jota?

In a rare and touching tribute, Liverpool has officially retired Jota’s number 20 jersey across all levels of the club, including LFC Women and the Academy. A club statement read, “The move is recognition of not only the immeasurable contribution our lad from Portugal made to the Reds’ on-pitch successes over the last five years, but also the profound personal impact he had on his teammates, colleagues and supporters and the everlasting connections he built with them.”

Jota joined Liverpool in 2020 from Wolves and played a key role in helping the club secure their 20th Premier League title.
