Who Is Thiago Almada and Why Is He Making Headlines?
Atletico Madrid have confirmed an agreement to sign Argentine international Thiago Almada from Brazilian club Botafogo. The La Liga giants announced on Tuesday that the deal is subject to the player passing a medical and signing his contract.
“Our club and the Brazilian side have reached an agreement, pending confirmation once the player passes the required medical examination and signs the contract,” Atletico stated on social media.
Almada, 24, is no stranger to top-tier football. He was part of Argentina’s 2022 World Cup-winning squad and featured in the 2024 Paris Olympics. Known for his creative spark, Almada plays as an attacking midfielder and is recognized for his sharp vision and footwork.
What Has Almada Achieved in His Career So Far?
Almada began his professional journey at Velez Sarsfield, debuting in 2018 at just 17 years old. His promising performances quickly attracted international attention. In 2022, he made a move to Major League Soccer, joining Atlanta United, where he was named MLS Rookie of the Year after his debut season.
Last summer, he signed with Botafogo and had a strong impact, making 26 appearances and helping the club secure both the Brazilian league title and the Copa Libertadores. His standout form earned him a loan move to French side Lyon, where he continued to shine, scoring two goals and assisting five more in 20 matches across all competitions.
Almada’s arrival brings a new dimension to Atletico’s midfield. With his international experience and versatility, he’s expected to add creativity and tempo in the final third. His track record in Argentina, Brazil, the U.S., and France highlights his adaptability and hunger to perform at the highest level.
Once the medical and paperwork are complete, Almada will officially join Diego Simeone’s squad, strengthening Atletico’s ambitions ahead of the new La Liga season.
