Why Is Paul Biya Running Again at 92?
Cameroon’s President Paul Biya has officially declared his candidacy for a historic eighth presidential term. At 92 years old, Biya is currently the world’s oldest serving head of state. His announcement came via a post on his verified X account on Sunday: “I am a candidate in the presidential election. Rest assured that my determination to serve you matches the urgency of the challenges we face.”

If re-elected, Biya would remain in power until nearly 100. He first assumed office in 1982 following the resignation of his predecessor, Ahmadou Ahidjo, and has since maintained a firm grip on the country’s leadership for over four decades.

Biya’s health has often been a subject of national speculation, especially after he disappeared from public view for 42 days last year. Despite the speculation, the government has consistently dismissed concerns, even labeling discussions about his health a matter of national security.

What Are the Reactions to His Candidacy?
The announcement, though anticipated, has stirred mixed reactions. While the ruling Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM) and other loyalists have long urged Biya to run again, opposition parties and civil society groups have expressed concern over the implications of another term.

Critics argue that Biya’s extended presidency has hindered democratic growth and economic reform. In recent months, two former allies have exited the ruling coalition and declared their own bids for the presidency, signaling deepening fractures within the establishment.

Biya first broke tradition in 2018 by announcing his candidacy through social media, a move he repeated this year. His digital engagement marks a rare direct communication with the public, despite his usual absence from national events and limited public appearances.

Who Are the Other Presidential Candidates?
Several opposition figures have already declared their intention to challenge Biya in the October 12 election. Notable candidates include Maurice Kamto of the Cameroon Renaissance Movement, who was the runner-up in 2018; Joshua Osih of the Social Democratic Front; lawyer Akere Muna; and Cabral Libii of the Cameroon Party for National Reconciliation.

All of them have criticized Biya’s long-standing rule and are calling for reforms to ensure a fair and transparent election in 2025.

Cameroon, a key cocoa and oil producer, continues to face serious national challenges, including an unresolved separatist conflict in its English-speaking regions and threats from Boko Haram in the north. As the country approaches this pivotal election, the prospect of another term for Biya raises pressing questions about political succession, stability, and the future of democratic governance in the nation.
