What Do Investigators Say About the Crash?
Spanish police believe excessive speed may have been a key factor in the car crash that claimed the lives of Liverpool striker Diogo Jota and his younger brother, André Silva. The Civil Guard reported on Tuesday that early findings point to the vehicle exceeding the speed limit before veering off a motorway in Zamora, northwest Spain, on July 3.
“All the tests conducted so far indicate that the driver of the vehicle was Diogo Jota,” authorities confirmed. Officials are still analyzing tyre marks and other evidence from the scene. Initial reports had suggested a tyre may have blown out during an overtaking maneuver, leading to the crash and subsequent fire.
How Did the Tragedy Unfold?
The devastating accident occurred just days after Jota had celebrated his wedding to longtime partner Rute Cardoso on June 22. Hours before the crash, he had shared a joyful video from the ceremony. The couple had three children.
The crash took the lives of Jota, 28, and André Silva, 25, sending shockwaves through the global football community. Tributes poured in from fans, teammates, and political figures across Portugal and the UK. A joint funeral was held on Saturday in their hometown of Gondomar, a suburb of Porto, drawing hundreds in mourning.
What Was Jota’s Legacy in Football?
Jota had built an impressive career with stints at Atlético Madrid, FC Porto, and Wolves before joining Liverpool in 2020. He quickly became a fan favorite, scoring 65 goals in five seasons. His efforts helped Liverpool secure the FA Cup and League Cup in the 2021/22 season and clinch their 20th Premier League title last year.
On the international stage, Jota earned 49 caps for Portugal and was part of the team that won the UEFA Nations League.
His brother André was also making strides in football, playing midfield for FC Penafiel in Portugal’s second division.
