How Did Summer Tides 2025 Kick Off?
Thursday night’s SGR ride to Diani turned into an unforgettable mobile party as festival-goers filled the coaches with music, dancing, and pure excitement. By Friday morning, Diani was buzzing. The energy spilled straight into the Jacaranda Hotel for the festival’s opening night. DJs lit up the decks while the crowd danced till 5:30 AM. With tight security, booming sound from Taafrija, and non-stop vibes from Airbeat’s team, it was the perfect kickoff.
After a quick rest, Saturday brought more of the same, only this time, the weather had its agenda. As the tradition goes, everyone headed to the beach to catch the iconic Summer Tides sunrise. But instead of golden rays, there was nothing but grey skies and drizzle. Still, the crowd’s spirit didn’t fade.

What Happened on Sunday During Travel?
The return journey took a sudden turn. On Sunday afternoon, roadblocks at the Dongo Kundu bypass caused massive delays. Police conducted ID checks and alco-blow tests, and many travelers missed their scheduled trains and flights. Suspicion spread that the roadblocks were politically motivated due to the upcoming Saba Saba protests.
Then at 7:26 PM, Kenya Railways posted that the 10 PM train to Nairobi had been cancelled because of “technical issues.” No immediate alternative was given. Later, a 12:31 AM update advised passengers to be at the station by 8 AM. It was posted while most were asleep, and many never saw it.

How Did a Booking Error Make Things Worse?
After scrambling to the station by 5:30 AM, I realized I’d booked the wrong date, June 7 instead of July 6. My friend had made the same mistake. We had no choice but to buy fresh tickets for the 8 AM train. With just two minutes to spare, we made a mad dash through security and boarded just in time at 8:05 AM.
Did the Protests Affect the Return to Nairobi?
Yes. Upon arrival in Nairobi, we were greeted by blocked roads and citywide protests already underway. Passengers at the SGR station and JKIA had to wait for hours just to find routes home. What started as a music festival turned into a 72-hour rollercoaster.
Summer Tides 2025 was everything at once: thrilling, unpredictable, and unforgettable. From the beach parties to the booking drama and protest gridlocks, one thing is clear: what happens in Diani doesn’t always stay in Diani. Sometimes, it follows you back to Nairobi.
