Nico Williams has committed his long-term future to Athletic Bilbao, signing a new contract that runs through 2035. The club confirmed the deal on Friday, effectively ending transfer speculation that linked the Spanish forward with Barcelona and other top European sides.
Why Did Williams Choose to Stay at Athletic?
The 22-year-old star extended his contract by eight years, with Athletic increasing his release clause by 50 percent. The club hailed the move as “a resounding success” in the face of “dizzying offers.”
“When you have to make decisions, for me what matters most is the heart. I am where I want to be, with my people, this is my home,” Williams said in the official club statement.
Williams’ decision reflects a strong sense of loyalty to the Basque side, where he has grown through the youth ranks and formed a solid attacking partnership with his older brother, Iñaki Williams.

What Has Williams Achieved at Bilbao?
Nico Williams has become one of La Liga’s most exciting wingers. With 31 goals across five seasons, his influence has only grown each year. Most notably, his standout performances were instrumental in Athletic Bilbao’s historic 2024 Copa del Rey win, which ended the club’s 40-year trophy drought. His contributions also helped the team secure a spot in the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League.
What About Interest from Other Clubs?
Reports had widely linked Williams with a potential move to La Liga champions Barcelona, as well as Premier League club Arsenal. His electric pace, dribbling, and creative play have drawn attention from scouts across Europe. But with this new deal, Athletic Bilbao have made a strong statement about keeping their top talents home.
Williams is also gaining momentum on the international stage. He was named Player of the Match in the Euro 2024 final, where Spain defeated England to lift the trophy.
With this renewed contract, Nico Williams is set to remain a key figure at San Mamés, as a symbol of Athletic’s ambitious future.
