Guardiola Says Manchester City Squad Must Be Trimmed

Manchester City Head Coach Pep Guardiola

Why Does Guardiola Want to Reduce His Squad?

Manchester City head coach Pep Guardiola has made it clear that the club needs to offload players this summer. Speaking during a press briefing in Atlanta on Saturday, Guardiola explained that the current size of the squad could lead to discontent among players who are not getting enough minutes on the pitch.

“I will love to have the players we have right now all season,” Guardiola said. “The problem is they will be unhappy during the season, they will be sad, they will be disappointed. I don’t want that. I do it for them, not for me. For them.”

City currently has more than 30 players in the senior squad, far above Guardiola’s preferred number of around 20. This imbalance was caused by recent signings like Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Cherki, and Rayan Ait-Nouri, ahead of the Club World Cup campaign. While Ilkay Gundogan has been linked with a potential move to Turkish side Galatasaray, Guardiola stated he was not aware of any final decision.

City kicked off their Club World Cup campaign with a win against Wydad AC and will face Al Ain on Sunday at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. A victory in this match will secure their place in the last 16. Guardiola emphasized the importance of the tournament, calling it a “privilege to be here.”

He also addressed complaints about the competition, praising South American teams for their passion. “I love when I see Botafogo, all the Brazilian teams, Argentinian teams, how they celebrate, how they are together, I love them,” said Guardiola. “I’m pretty sure for the South American teams… this competition is maybe the maximum.”

What’s the Status of Injured Players Like Rodri?

Midfielder Rodri is still recovering from a knee injury and was not able to start City’s most recent match. However, Guardiola confirmed his progress: “He’s getting better. He can play 20 minutes, 30 minutes at a time. He wants to play to help, but we want to protect his knee.”

As City pushes forward in the Club World Cup, Guardiola hopes to balance success on the pitch with maintaining harmony in the dressing room. He reiterated that competing in this tournament is a reward in itself and a stepping stone to future titles. “It’s a privilege to be here… to be back in four years, you have to win big, big prizes,” he said.
