Karen Nyamu Apologizes for Linking Opposition to Albert Ojwang’s Death

Senator Karen Nyamu has issued an apology following widespread criticism over her earlier remarks concerning the death of blogger Albert Ojwang, who died in police custody after his arrest in Homa Bay County and transfer to Nairobi.

Nyamu initially sparked outrage by suggesting the opposition could have staged Ojwang’s situation to undermine the government. In a social media post, she wrote that Kenya had witnessed “shameless self-abductions” in the past and implied that Ojwang’s case might be another attempt by the opposition to sway public opinion. Her comments were made before official reports were released, including a statement from Police Inspector General Douglas Kanja.

Under growing pressure, Nyamu took to her Facebook page on June 10 to clarify her stance. She emphasized that she never claimed Ojwang had faked his abduction, only that opposition elements had, in the past, staged incidents. She admitted the timing of her statement was premature, saying it was made before verified information had emerged.

In her follow-up statement, Nyamu called on President William Ruto to ensure accountability in the case. She demanded a thorough investigation and swift criminal charges against any police officers involved, referencing the urgency shown in past high-profile cases like that of Ongondo Were. She also urged for maximum compensation to be given to Ojwang’s family. Describing Ojwang as “young, bright, and full of promise,” she added, “As a parent, this hurt me deeply. I am truly sorry to the family.”

Despite the apology, public reaction remained largely critical. Many Kenyans accused the senator of making insensitive and poorly timed remarks. Social media users responded harshly, with some questioning her integrity and others criticizing her for appearing out of touch with the gravity of the situation.

Adding to the emotional weight of the story, a leaked audio recording of Ojwang’s final phone call surfaced online. In it, he expressed confusion and fear about his arrest. His friend tried to reassure him and promised to visit the next day, a visit that tragically never happened, as Ojwang died in custody before they could meet.

The case has sparked national concern and calls for justice. While Nyamu has backtracked on her earlier claims, many Kenyans are still waiting to see how the investigation unfolds and whether real accountability will follow.
