“You Only Live Once” Culture and the Habits Hurting Gen Z in 2026

Kenya, the economic hub of East Africa, clearly shows that its citizens, the majority of whom are young people, are hard-working and ambitious. Between 5:00 am and 7:00 am along major roads, it often looks like a major event is underway. In reality, it is young Kenyans heading to work, factories, construction sites, offices, and informal jobs in pursuit of an honest living. This daily routine reflects effort, resilience, and determination.

Gen Zs are not lazy. They are energetic, creative, and ambitious. However, 2026 has exposed lifestyle patterns that quietly undermine these strengths. These patterns do not destroy progress overnight. They grow slowly, appearing harmless at first, then gradually draining focus, finances, and long-term direction. The damage comes from habits that feel normal, trendy, or entertaining but eventually work against personal growth.

One of the most visible patterns is the rise of the ‘Sherehe Sheria’ mindset. What started as a playful phrase has evolved into a way of life for many young people. It represents reckless partying, impulsive spending, and living without regard for consequences. Parties are planned without budgets, and money meant for rent, savings, or investment disappears in one night. Social media pressure fuels this behavior, as people try to prove they are enjoying life instead of building stability. The issue is not celebration. The problem is celebration without limits, planning, or accountability. Fun without discipline slowly turns into a financial trap that is difficult to escape.

How is gambling quietly damaging Gen Z finances in 2026?

Gambling has become deeply normalised among young people. Betting apps, odds groups, and so-called sure bets dominate phones and conversations. For many Gen Zs, gambling is no longer entertainment but a perceived shortcut to success. The danger lies in how subtly it takes hold. Small bets become daily habits, and losses are chased aggressively. Money earned through long hours of work is handed back to betting platforms. Over time, gambling kills patience, breeds desperation, and rewires the mind to expect quick money instead of steady progress.

Alcohol abuse is another growing concern. Alcohol itself is not the problem. Abuse is. In 2026, drinking has become a daily escape for many Gen Zs dealing with stress, pressure, unemployment, and constant comparison. Instead of addressing challenges directly, alcohol becomes the coping mechanism. This habit affects judgment, productivity, relationships, and health. Some young people lose jobs, opportunities, and respect because drinking takes priority over responsibility. What begins as stress relief slowly turns into dependence.

Illicit relationships also play a major role in derailing progress. These include secret affairs, transactional relationships, multiple partners without boundaries, and connections driven by money rather than values. Such relationships drain emotional energy, finances, and focus. They create cycles of drama, secrecy, guilt, and instability. Many Gen Zs find themselves trapped in distractions that delay growth and damage long-term goals.

Why does the wrong company keep holding Gen Z back?

No influence shapes a young person more than the company they keep. Friends affect habits, thinking, spending patterns, and decision-making. Wrong company normalises poor behavior and makes irresponsibility appear attractive. Discipline and planning start to feel boring when surrounded by people who mock effort and patience. Many Gen Zs fail not because they lack potential, but because they listen to voices that pull them away from focus and purpose. Being surrounded by people with no vision eventually erodes your own.
