Man City Defender Josko Gvardiol Out with Broken Leg After Chelsea Draw

Manchester City confirmed that defender Josko Gvardiol suffered a broken leg during Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium. Gvardiol was one of two centre-backs forced off in the second half, alongside Ruben Dias, as Enzo Fernandez scored a stoppage-time equaliser to salvage a point for the visitors. The result leaves City six points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal.

City revealed that Gvardiol sustained a tibial fracture to his right leg and will undergo surgery later this week. The club added that “assessment remains ongoing to ascertain the full extent of the injury and expected prognosis.” Before the full diagnosis, manager Pep Guardiola had warned that it “doesn’t look good” for either Gvardiol or Dias, whose injury details have not yet been disclosed.

The absence of both centre-backs compounds City’s defensive problems. John Stones has been sidelined for the past month with a thigh injury, while Rayan Ait-Nouri is away representing Algeria at the Africa Cup of Nations. Midfielder Nico Gonzalez also missed the Chelsea match, and Guardiola will be without Savinho, Oscar Bobb, Mateo Kovacic, and Omar Marmoush for Wednesday’s home clash against Brighton.

There was a positive moment for City as Rodri returned to the starting lineup, playing the full 90 minutes against Chelsea. The Spain international had faced multiple setbacks, including a hamstring injury while attempting to recover from a severe knee problem that kept him out for most of last season. Reflecting on his return, Rodri said, “It’s been a terrible, terrible time for me. Everything that comes right now is a gift, every minute that I’ve been on the pitch, it’s a joy for me. Thank you to God for giving me this second opportunity and to enjoy my profession and recover my smile.”

As City navigates this defensive crisis, the focus will be on maintaining form while key players recover. Guardiola’s side now faces a challenging schedule with multiple absences, highlighting the importance of squad depth and resilience in their title race.
