Mozambique finally claimed their first-ever Africa Cup of Nations victory after a 39-year wait, edging Gabon 3-2 in a thrilling Group F match played in Agadir on Sunday. The historic result marked a defining moment for the Mambas, who had endured decades of frustration on the continental stage without tasting victory.
Coming into the match, Mozambique carried a heavy record. Since their first AFCON appearance in 1986, they had drawn four matches and lost 12. Ranked 24 places below Gabon in the world standings, expectations were modest. What followed, however, was a fearless and disciplined performance that rewrote their tournament history.
Mozambique started with intent and nearly took an early lead when Geny Catamo broke through, only to be let down by poor control as goalkeeper Loyce Mbaba rushed out to smother the danger. That moment set the tone for a side playing with confidence rather than caution. Their willingness to attack paid off on 37 minutes when Faisal Bangal opened the scoring. Rising unchallenged from a corner, the striker powered a header that bounced into the left corner, leaving Mbaba helpless.
How Mozambique Took Control of the Match
The Mambas doubled their lead just five minutes later after a physical duel between the two captains changed the course of the game. Bruno Ecuele Manga pulled the shirt of Elias Domingues Pelembe inside the box, prompting the referee to award a penalty. Catamo stepped up and calmly sent the ball into the left corner as Mbaba dived the other way.
Mozambique nearly extended their advantage again moments later when Witiness Quembo struck a curling effort from outside the box that rattled the woodwork. Gabon responded just before the break, reducing the deficit through their star forward. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang capitalized on a loose ball after Mozambique goalkeeper Ernan Siluane failed to hold a Didier Ndong shot. The 36-year-old striker tapped in to make it 2-1 at halftime.
Despite the setback, Mozambique emerged from the interval with renewed energy. Portugal-based right back Diogo Calila restored their two-goal cushion on 52 minutes, venturing forward to meet a Witi cross and nodding it past Mbaba. The goal underlined Mozambique’s bravery, with defenders contributing decisively in attack.
Aubameyang nearly struck again soon after but headed wide from close range, offering Mozambique a crucial reprieve. Veteran captain Domingues, at 42 the second oldest player at the tournament, was later replaced by defensive midfielder Manuel Kambala as the Mambas focused on protecting their lead.
Why the Final Stages Turned Into a Nervy Finish
Gabon refused to fade quietly. Siluane produced excellent saves to deny both Aubameyang and Ndong, but sustained pressure eventually told. A corner in the 76th minute led to a crowded goalmouth scramble, and Alex Moussounda smashed the ball into the net to make it 3-2.
The final minutes were tense as Mozambique defended deep, aware of what was at stake. Despite Gabon pushing forward, the Mambas held firm to secure a landmark victory that will be remembered across the nation.
The result leaves Mozambique, defending champions Ivory Coast, and Cameroon all level on three points in Group F. Gabon, meanwhile, suffered a second straight defeat after their earlier loss to Cameroon, placing their qualification hopes in serious danger.
