It started as a casual bet that felt harmless. Over the years, it grew into a destructive habit that left secondary school teacher Maxwell Muriithi with an empty bank account and overwhelming emotional strain. What began as entertainment eventually consumed his finances, relationships, and mental stability.

Muriithi explains that his gambling journey started while he was in university. At the time, it appeared to be a fun activity, but it quickly escalated into a routine that drained every coin he had. He recalls spending all his upkeep money on betting and relying on lies to access food from friends. In his words, “All the money my parents gave me for upkeep, I would spend it on gaming and would have to craft some lies to get food from friends.”

The habit followed him into adulthood. Even after securing employment, the cycle of betting and deception continued. He says, “When I got employed, I gambled my entire salary and lied to my family that I had not been paid so that they could continue supporting me.” The pattern grew worse as he took loans hoping to recover losses, only to sink deeper into financial distress. He narrates, “I took a loan of Ksh600,000 and blew it up in gaming, took another loan of Kshh1.3 million, which also went down the drain.”

How Did the Addiction Deepen Over Time?

As the addiction tightened its grip, Muriithi ran out of viable ways to finance it. When his payslip could no longer support the habit, he began borrowing large sums from family members under false pretenses. He admits, “I took Kshh2.6 million from auntie, and I was supposed to buy a parcel of land for her, but I spent the money on gaming.” His inability to repay loans left him overwhelmed by guilt and fear, while the mounting pressure created significant tension within his family.

What Were the Emotional Consequences of the Debt?

Beyond financial loss, the emotional toll became unbearable. Muriithi reached a point where he contemplated ending his life due to the heavy debts and the shame attached to his actions. The strain on his mental health reflects a pattern seen among many individuals who struggle with gambling addiction, where financial desperation often leads to feelings of hopelessness.

His story is a reminder of how quickly gambling can escalate from a harmless activity to a life-altering crisis. For young adults navigating financial independence, Muriithi’s experience stands as a cautionary tale about the risks of unchecked betting habits and the importance of seeking help before the situation spirals.
