Man United Drop Points After West Ham Comeback at Old Trafford

Manchester United were left frustrated after failing to hold onto a lead, allowing West Ham to salvage a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford on Thursday. Diogo Dalot’s first Premier League goal in 19 months gave United an early advantage, but Soungoutou Magassa’s equaliser ensured the visitors left with a crucial point in their battle against relegation.

Why Did United Fail to Secure the Win?
United dominated possession for long stretches but struggled to break down West Ham’s disciplined defence. Manager Ruben Amorim welcomed back Matheus Cunha from injury to boost the attack, yet the hosts lacked the creativity and intensity needed to convert dominance into goals.

Joshua Zirkzee, who ended a near-year-long wait for a Premier League goal against Crystal Palace on Sunday, again struggled to make an impact as the focal point of United’s attack in the absence of the injured Benjamin Sesko. Zirkzee came closest before half-time when he improvised to meet Amad Diallo’s dangerous cross, only for Aaron Wan-Bissaka to clear off the line. Bruno Fernandes also nearly scored from a loose ball volley, clipping the post in a moment that summed up United’s frustration.

West Ham, missing the creativity of Lucas Paqueta following a red card, relied heavily on Jarrod Bowen to create chances. Bowen nearly scored with a jinking run through four United challenges before his effort was saved by goalkeeper Senne Lammens.

How Did West Ham Equalise?
United finally made their pressure count in the 60th minute when Dalot converted Casemiro’s deflected effort, scoring his first Premier League goal since May 2024. However, United were unable to extend their advantage. Bowen’s persistence earned a corner, and after Noussair Mazraoui cleared a header off the line, Magassa was on hand to slot home his first English football goal.

United had late opportunities to snatch all three points, with Fernandes failing to find the target in stoppage time on two separate occasions. The draw leaves Manchester United in eighth place, just two points off the top four, while West Ham move closer to safety, two points behind the relegation threshold.

The result highlights United’s ongoing struggle to turn promising positions into wins, dropping points against lower-ranked sides including Nottingham Forest, Tottenham, Everton, and now West Ham. Their challenge remains converting possession dominance into decisive finishing as the Premier League season intensifies.
